Tripoli Motor Testing Commitee

 

The Tripoli Motor Testing Committee (TMT) is responsible for the testing, certification, and classification of model rocket and high-power rocket motors for use in Tripoli activities. Through standardized testing procedures and ongoing cooperation with manufacturers, testing organizations, and the rocketry community, TMT helps ensure that certified motors meet established performance and safety standards.

A primary objective of the committee is to verify compliance with applicable safety requirements, including the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1125. These standards define the safety, performance, and manufacturing requirements that rocket motors must satisfy to be certified for use.

To accomplish this, TMT regularly performs testing on a wide range of rocket motors. These tests measure factors such as total impulse, thrust, burn time, and overall performance characteristics. Once testing is complete, the results are documented and maintained as part of the committee's certification records.

The records maintained by TMT include test data, certification documentation, and notices of compliance issued to manufacturers whose motors successfully complete the certification process. These records provide an important reference for flyers, vendors, manufacturers, and regulatory authorities, and help ensure that certified motors continue to meet the standards required for safe and responsible use within the hobby.


In addition to the notices of compliance, the TMT also records motor performance data. This data is made publicly available and can be accessed through the thrustcurve.org website.

The resources below provide access to certification information, testing requirements, technical references, and reporting tools used by flyers, vendors, manufacturers, and certification organizations. Whether you are verifying a motor's certification status, researching performance data, reviewing testing requirements, or reporting a motor issue, these resources provide valuable information to support safe and informed participation in rocketry.
Combined Certified Motor List
The Combined Certified Motor List is the official reference for currently certified rocket motors recognized by Tripoli Rocketry Association and participating certification organizations. Flyers, vendors, and event organizers should consult this list to verify the certification status, classification, and availability of motors approved for use in Tripoli activities.

Thrustcurve.org
Thrustcurve.org is an online repository of rocket motor performance data, including thrust curves, motor specifications, and simulation files. This resource is widely used by flyers, designers, educators, and software applications to evaluate motor performance and support flight planning and rocket design.

TMT Policies and Procedures
This document outlines the policies, testing standards, certification requirements, and operating procedures used by the Tripoli Motor Testing program. Manufacturers, testing personnel, and interested members may use this document to better understand the certification process and the requirements necessary for motor approval.

TMT Motor Testing Agreement
The Motor Testing Agreement defines the requirements, responsibilities, and procedures for manufacturers submitting motors for certification testing. It provides important information regarding testing expectations, documentation requirements, fees, and the certification process.

Section 8.3 List of Lists
This reference document provides links and information regarding the various certification lists, classifications, and approved motor references maintained by the Tripoli Motor Testing program. It serves as a central resource for locating current certification and motor status information.

Tripoli Rocket Motor Forum
The Tripoli Rocket Motor Forum provides a venue for discussion of motor certification activities, testing procedures, technical topics, manufacturer information, and motor-related announcements. Members can use the forum to stay informed about certification developments and participate in discussions related to rocket motors and propulsion systems.

Report a Motor Failure
This form is used to report motor malfunctions, performance anomalies, or suspected certification issues. Reports submitted by flyers, vendors, and launch personnel help TMT identify trends, investigate potential problems, and maintain the integrity and safety of certified rocket motors. Members are encouraged to report motor failures promptly and provide as much supporting information as possible, including photographs, motor information, flight details, and recovered hardware when available.
